LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center

At Pennington Biomedical, we uncover the triggers of chronic diseases – in other words, what is happening in the body before disease occurs. Many chronic diseases, like heart disease and diabetes, share the same triggers. We have learned that other seemingly unrelated diseases – like dementia and obesity – are connected. It is for this reason that we have created a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to our research that we call “science without walls”.

Gage Research Group

The Gage Research Group is based at Northern Arizona University and lead by Dr. Matthew Gage.  Dr. Gage and his team are primarily involved with protein chemistry including intrinsically disordered proteins, development of novel antimicrobial agents, and protein conformational changes.

Dr. Jonathan Vande Geest

The Soft Tissue Biomechanics Laboratory (STBL) is focused on solving biomedically-related problems using state of the art experimental and computational techniques in biomechanics. The STBL has specific interests in the area of constitutive modeling of soft tissues including native tissues, tissue engineered biomaterials, and medical devices. We are also interested in identifying structure-function relationships within healthy and diseased tissues. Specific areas of research include aneurysm mechanics, nerve paralysis, ocular mechanics, porohyperelasticity of soft tissues, and the development of polymeric and tissue engineered biomedical devices.

Dr. Kiisa Nishikawa

Dr. Kiisa Nishikawa’s lab studies the relationship between biomechanics and neural control of movement. Here one must take into account both structural as well as functional details in order to understand how animals control their bodies to perform the diversity of behaviors seen in nature. In particular, they study how the mechanics of the musculoskeletal system influences these behavior. To study this neural control/biomechanics relationship, they use a number of animal model systems. These include: ballistic tongue projection in toads; jumping in frogs; running in normal and titinopathic mice, and eccentric training in opossums. They use techniques from muscle physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, neurophysiology, and neuroethology.

Dr. Steven Goldman

Beginning in 1977, Dr. Goldman established a strong laboratory and clinical based Cardiology Research program at the Tucson VA Medical Center, SAVAHCS. The basic laboratory focuses on heart failure; the clinical research operation focuses on large scale multicenter trials where Dr. Goldman has been National PI on many of these trials through the VA Cooperative Studies Program. Dr. Goldman received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati where he went on to serve the US Navy and Marine Corp in Viet Nam and long Beach, Ca. He finished his Cardiology Fellowship at Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and came to the Tucson Veterans Administration hospital and University of Arizona in 1975.

Dr. Brent Nelson

Dr. Nelson’s primary technical research is working on problems at the intersection of the sciences and engineering, with current areas of interest including biomaterials characterization, applications of atomic force microscopy, renewable energy, energy conservation, and biomimetic design.

Dr. Zoe Diana Draelos

Dr. Draelos is a clinical and research dermatologist, with a special interest in problems associated with the skin, hair, and nails. She is trained to perform medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology and routinely shares her expertise with others through lectures, demonstrations, and the many textbooks she has authored. She enjoys developing treatment plans to insure the resolution of medical skin problems and also offer a variety of cosmetic procedures, including filler injections, botulinum toxin injections, face peels, and liposuction.
